All your information has been collected so lets get online!

At this point you should be registered with HMRC and have received your online login ID and password. You have gathered together your income and allowable expenses  – steps 1, 2 and 3 of this blog series. Now you are ready to complete your self assessment tax return online…

1. Go to the HMRC online login page for self assessment and enter your ID and password.

2. As you have done all your preparatory work, completing your self assessment tax return online shouldn’t be a difficult task. You need to be methodical as you copy information from your records to the tax return.

HMRC have an online service demonstrator that will take you through the screens.

Do take your time. Don’t rush the process. The HMRC’s system can save your return at any point so you don’t have to complete and submit your tax return in one session.

3. Check and check again!. HMRC want taxpayers to get their tax returns right so there are some automatic checks built into the software.  It is best to leave a few days between completing your tax return and doing a final review – it is easier to spot any errors with a fresh pair of eyes.

Once you have finished every section and reviewed your tax return you can submit it – phew you’ve met the deadline!
